The Saint Barnabas-Metrowest Individual Practice Association (IPA), a non-profit hospital based body of physicians at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, was established in 1986 and has about 600 member physicians. The IPA was established for: (1) the promotion of health and welfare of the NJ population, in particular the areas serviced by SBMC; (2) the encouragement of the provision of health care at a reasonable cost; (3) the fostering of the development of health care service plans and (4) the fostering of the development of quality assurance standards in the provision of medical and health care. Since 1986 the IPA has pursued group contracts with major third party insurers in our area at a fee for service. We have contracts with Health Net, First Health, Magnacare, Family Choice Health Alliance, Qualcare and Multiplan. The IPA physicians are the providers for the Saint Barnabas Physician Partnership, a partnership of physicians and the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. The nurses and employees of Saint Barnabas are covered by The Saint Barnabas Physician Partnership. The Partnership also provides an insurance product, (MEWA), for SBMC physicians and their office staff and their families. This plan is administered by Qualcare. To participate in the Saint Barnabas Physician Partnership, one must be a member of the local physicians' organization. At SBMC this is the Saint Barnabas-Metrowest IPA. The IPA strongly feels that through physician input,
responsible programs can be constructed that are sensitive to both patient and
physician needs. The Saint Barnabas
Metrowest IPA is governed by a 24 member Board of Trustees.
Enrollment is open to all physicians in good standing on the staff of
Saint Barnabas Medical Center with an annual membership fee of $250.
